"If we can allow ourselves to step off the hamster wheel from time to time, maybe even go somewhere to get away from the craziness that swirls around us, I think it can be enormously beneficial.

Hurried and worried until we're buried,

Friday 56 / Book Beginnings
Friday 56
"This is our home, we told him. There are over three million Jews in Poland. Are we all supposed to leave, to run from the lawless violence? Cardinal Kakowski said he would take the matter up with his superiors and see what he could do."
Book Beginnings
"Ben Solomon stood before his bathroom mirror fumbling with his bow tie. He was eighty-three years old and getting dressed for Judgment Day. Years had come and gone since he had last worn his tuxedo, but then, Judgment Day was a black tie affair."

"And I'm doing some home repairs trying to make a grand dream come true with a handyman's special house, if you get my drift. Which now has wall damage I need fixed up."
"I didn't say anything. I had experienced the aftermath of death plenty but had never stared it in the face before, and I was struck dumb by the simple mystery of the process. One minute, life had been coursing through August's body, and the next, he was as still and somber as snow....I found it hard to believe that he wouldn't rise up in a minute or two, brush off his trousers, and wink at us all."

"Technically speaking, I guess you could say I killed Robert Morgan, but I did it only because he insisted on it, and because death had clearly already gotten its mealy hands on him, and because I knew the very act of asking must have made him madder than hell."rosecityreader.com
"I was used to plenty of people staring at me, but no one had ever paid such deliberate attention to me before. My father saw me only through the haze of his evening beers. Serena Jane mostly ignored me. Brenda Dyerson, busy with a hundred things in her falling-down house, kept me pinned firmly in her peripheral vision, along with Amelia, who was always so close to me that we could touch hands without blinking but who never said a word, just smiled from time to time, offering me her broken toys when she was done playing with them.fredasvoice

Merry Ex-Mas by Victoria Christopher Murray
“Even
if you can get a cab today, your car will still be here. How are you
gonna get it home?”…It was a good thing that Angel was doing all the
thinking right now….All I wanted to do was close my eyes, even for just a
few minutes. That would be the best Christmas gift right now.”shouldbereading

It's Monday! What Are You Reading?
I finished No Ordinary Noel by Pat G'orge Walker. It's really a laugh every moment. Her novels are so much fun.
Now I'm reading Claire of the Sea Light by Edwidge Danticat. The setting is Haiti. So far it's very sad. The little girl's mother died in childbirth. The father finds it necessary to find another woman to raise his girl child.
I am also reading Merry Ex-Mas by Victoria Christopher Murray. It's really a reality based holiday novel. Three women friends find themselves facing very challenging situations with their ex-husbands. It's hard to put this one down.http://www.bookjourney.wordpress.com

Teaser Tuesday
"This was pure foolishness, and I didn't have time. Especially since this was the Saturday before Christmas, and although I'd finished my gift shopping for everyone else, this was when I loved to shop for myself. I loved being in that mix of confusion with all the last-minute shoppers. All of that pushing and shoving--that was the real spirit of Christmas."http://www.shouldbereading.wordpress.com
