First Chapter First Paragraph(Simon and Schuster/Net Galley)

http://bibliophilebythesea.blogspot.com
"Melvin is seventeen, the star of his basketball team, and expected to have a bright future. But it all falls to pieces one night when he joins his brothers' thug friends at a wild party with two rich white girls. Drugged and drunk for most of the night, Melvin misses a brutal assault on the two girls. When the crime comes to light, he is arrested and charged with masterminding the gang rape. One of the girls' fathers is a prominent prosecutor, who persuades the girls to lie--all because he hates the possibility that a young black man could succeed in life. He wants to crush him, and Melvin doesn't stand a chance."

  1. That sounds like an interesting book! It covers a lot of serious issues. So sad the girls are made to lie. They've already been victimized once and then to be manipulated like that . . . I hope they come forward by the end and Melvin's name is cleared.

  2. Funny cause I know another book with the same title, but it is Little White Lies and Butterflies, about a woman who pretends to be a chef in Greece. Very different book from the sound of it. If this is the synopsis, I kind of wish they hadn't included the part about the fathers not being able to stand to see a young black man succeed. That kind of ruins it for me. I'd rather discover that as I read. Hope you like it. Here's Mine

  3. I hope things work out for Melvin. It's awful that the girls are being made to lie, that's not getting justice for them and what they're being made to do will seriously impact them in the future. This is a really intense book. I would certainly continue reading it to see how things work out.
